Besides all the more comfortable hotels with standard "star" ratings, there are quite a few more affordable Amsterdam hostels and campsites.
Amsterdam hostels are the cheapest kind of accommodation you can find in the city centre, but be prepared for the lack of privacy and quiet. Especially when you are coming with a partner and need a room just for yourself, or like a private bathroom. In this case consider to book some hotel room instead.
Youth hostels in Amsterdam offer housing where a number of people share the same room (or a dorm) and the bathrooms are shared too. Though most have rooms with private bathrooms too. Usually on the each floor. Taking your own towels and sleeping bag may be useful, as some hostels charge an extra fee for bed sheets. Many hostels also rent bicycles.
Most of the hostels in Amsterdam also feature a common eating room, lockers, some board and card games, and internet access. Youth hostels are therefore a good option for students and backpackers on limited budget. They are also a very good place to meet some fellow travellers. If you are travelling with a partner, note that some of the cheap hostels in Amsterdam (Christian hostels "Shelter" for example) feature only single-sex dorms.
